It is advisable to get your dog spayed or neutered by the age of 6 months, this is the best way to prevent health issues. It has been shown that if you get your female dog spayed before she reaches her maturity, it will greatly lower the risk of mammary gland cancer and will also stop her chances of getting uterine infections. ​

The same holds true for your male dog, by having him neutered before he reaches his maturity, this will help stop him from having testicular cancer and also help health issues of the prostate, it also helps with some of the behavioral problems.

​By using a measuring scoop or a cup, this is one of the best ways to help control the amount of food and lower the risk of obesity, also by reading the feeding directions and following them. There have been studies done that indicate by controlling your dog's weight will help it to have a longer, healthier life. Managing your dog’s weight will help him or her to feel and act up to 20 percent younger.

There is a calculated 80% of dogs that suffer with oral disease. By cleaning your dog’s teeth a minimum of 3 times a week at home, you can help keep your dog’s teeth and gums healthy along with regular yearly dental visits and cleanings. You can also help your dog by giving him or her one of the rawhide treats, dental chew or even a bone, this will also help to maintain your dog’s healthy smile.

Research that has been done on the effects of second hand smoke on dogs shows the chances of dogs getting cancer from second hand smoke is greater for dogs living in an atmosphere where people smoke. For dogs with long noses there is a greater risk, in contrast to dogs with short or medium noses , but there will be many dogs that won’t get cancers or health issues from being in a smoking household, however the more smokers the greater the chances that the dog will have health issues, such as lung infections, asthma, respiratory problems and other health issues.
